A documentary isn't just reality footage. You have to have good footage, visual evidence, that sets forth the statement of the documentary, an idea and structure. It isn't just the camera itself capturing this footage or the type of camera. The person filming controls it all. It's all in the way the person uses the camera.
A good documentary won't just come about. An interview being filmed is not a good documentary. It is boring. You need to encourage people to tell you their stories and incorporate that into your film. Let the people's stories be the guide or focal point of your film.
There are many different genres affiliated with documentary films. Documentaries of behavior, emotion, real life, reenactments of past events, etc... are common types of documentaries. Each genre takes a little something different when filming it, but all in all they are pretty much the same. All documentaries look easier to film than they really are.

Making a documentary film
A documentary includes a lot of things. But also doesn't include a lot of things a normal movie does not. actors, high budgets and directors are all things that are included, in regular movies. Documentary film, is truly a lot more inspirational because of how little you need.
When filming a documentary it is important to remember not to stage your film. Real life is the beauty of a documentary. Natural backgrounds and real life conversations. But keep it interesting and have a purpose for it. A documentary is not just a bunch of random real life filming, it has a main idea or focus.
Filming a documentary contains a lot of emotion. Either beliefs of yourself or the person you're focused on in your film, whatever the case its not just making a film of what someone is saying. You need to incorperate the emotions that are going on around you while you film and use different angles, voices, scenary, and music to really portray these feelings. By just turning your camera a different way or looking at something a different way you're showing your audience a different perspective of whats going on. It puts a lot more thought and effort into your film. Whatever you choose to do with your film it is important to be creative and stay original.
